Render the content on the server. Most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, so a site that assembles its pages in the browser is invisible to them regardless of how good the content is. It is also the hardest to retrofit, which is why it belongs in the platform choice, not the punch list.
Ship structured data as a system, not a plugin afterthought. Schema markup identifying the organization, its services, its locations, its people, and its FAQs turns your site from prose an AI model must interpret into facts it can verify. During a redesign, structured data gets built into the templates once and every future page inherits it.
Write the money pages for extraction. AI systems assemble answers from passages they can lift cleanly: a definition that opens a topic in one sentence, a direct answer under a question heading, a service description specific enough to match what a customer actually asked. Redesign content workshops usually optimize for brand voice; add a second pass that asks, for each key page, what question does this answer and can a machine quote the answer without surgery.
Add the AI plumbing files. An llms.txt file describing the business and its key pages, a robots.txt that does not block the AI crawlers you want citing you, and a clean sitemap.xml are less than an hour of work that most redesigns still skip because they were not on the 2019 checklist the agency is reusing.
None of this competes with traditional SEO. Server rendering helps Googlebot too, structured data powers rich results, and citable content wins featured snippets. The redesign case gets strong when the rendering is client side, when the platform fights every technical change, when the design is costing conversions anyway, or when the business has outgrown the site's structure.
